Designing Effective Online Assessments (S17D02)

Properly assessing your students’ performance can be challenging even in traditional classrooms. While teaching online you’ll discover not only new challenges, but also more assessment opportunities. This course will introduce you to effective practices in online assessment. Building on a solid understanding of California Community College distance education policies and procedures, you will actively create an effective assessment strategy aligned with student learning outcomes. As you design your assessment strategy you will learn:

  • why online assessment is important and what opportunities online assessment offers you
  • how to maximize the potential of the digital paradigm in designing your assessment strategy
  • how to use a variety of assessment techniques and methods as a critical element in student centered instruction
  • about test preparation activities, test bias, and accessibility concerns for the online environment
  • how using projects, web resources and digital tools can reduce the possibility of cheating and plagiarism

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

  • Write well designed learning outcomes for your online courses
  • Design assessments aligned with your course objectives and learning outcomes
  • Implement different types of online assessment instruments to measure a variety of learning outcomes using different delivery methods
  • Develop rubrics to effectively score and measure student performance
  • Evaluate your online course assessment tools for effectiveness
  • Tie your assessment results as well as other performance information to course design and revision of your online course

Requirements for Completion

A passing performance on your assignments, and design and creation of appropriate artifacts, such as:

  • An assessment strategy and design:
    • List of Learning Outcomes you plan to use
    • Alignment of Student Learning Outcomes with assessment techniques
    • Specification of an appropriate assessment techniques for each outcome
    • Specification of number of items and content domain for each outcome
    • Specification of how the assessment design will address cheating and plagiarism
  • An effectively designed assessment(s) using multiple assessment methods
  • An effectively created rubric or scoring process to support feedback from performance assessments
  • A plan for evaluating the effectiveness of your assessments
  • Review of assessments results and identification of course revision implications

Hours Required

This is a 4-week course. Course completion, including reading, online discussions, and assignments, will take a minimum of 10 hours per week.

Recommended Skills

  • Basic computer skills (use of word processor, e-mail, file management)
  • Basic Internet skills (use of browser, searches, uploading and downloading files)
  • Familiarity with CMS assessment tools
  • Familiarity working with a variety of simple Internet applications

Technical Requirements

  • Fairly recent Mac or PC (not more than three years old) with a current operating system
  • Current browser (Firefox for the Mac; Internet Explorer 6 or later, or Firefox, for PC users)
  • Internet connection, preferably broadband (DSL speeds)
