Assessing Digital Learning (F17D03)

Course Description

Accurately assessing your students' performance can be challenging, but using Canvas to create assessments (whether your course is face-to-face, hybrid, or fully online), offers unique opportunities. This course will instroduce you to strategies that will help you design, deliver, and assess effective assessment plan aligned to your student learning outcomes. As you design your assessment strategy you will learn:
  • why online assessment is important and what opportunities online assessment offers you
  • how to maximize the potential of the digital paradigm in designing your assessment strategy
  • how to use a variety of assessment tools, techniques, and methods as a critical element in student-centered instruction
  • how to prepare your students for assessment, reduce test bias, and support accessibility when using digital assessments
  • how using projects, web resources, and digitial tools can reduce the possiblity of cheating and plagiarism

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to do the following: 

• Create an assessment plan for your course
• Write well-designed unit-level learning outcomes for your course
• Design summative assessments aligned to your learning outcomes
• Design formative assessments to support student learning and student success
• Develop rubrics for setting student expectations, providing constructive feedback, and streamlining grading
• Tie your assessment results as well as other performance information to course design and revision of your online course. 

Time Commitment & Recommended Skills

This class will take approx. 10 hours during each of the 4 weeks; for a total of 40 hours. Your time commitment will vary based upon your own level of experience with web technologies. Although this class is designed for novice users you should have the following:
• Basic computer skills (word processing, e-mail, file management)
• Basic Internet skills (use of browser, searches, uploading/downloading files)
• Familiarity with discussion boards
• An open mind and willingness to try new things

Technical Requirements

• Fairly recent Mac or PC (not more than three years old) with a current operating system.
• Current browser (Firefox, or Chrome are preferable)
• Internet connection, preferably broadband (DSL speeds) -- for viewing online videos


Ground Rules & Tips for Success

Each of our four weeks officially begins each Monday. You will regularly have assignments to turn in throughout the week. However, weekly content will be made available early to give you some extra time. Pay close attention to your due dates at the start of each content week and mark them somewhere on your own calendar so you don’t lose track of them. If this is your first online learning experience with Canvas, expect to invest extra time to orient yourself to the course design and tools.
• Block out time in your schedule to do the work.
• Consider yourself a member of a community.
• Treat contributions made by other members of the class with respect.
• Contribute regularly to group dialogue, including discussion posts. 
• Check in on class discussions regularly, if not daily.
• Have patience and a sense of humor with technology.
• Keep an open mind.
• Ask for help when you need it, and assist others when possible.
• Read this guide, and any other course material, carefully and ask for clarification when needed

The course will be archived 30 days from the last day of class. Please make sure you download and save any information or assignments you want to maintain prior to the archive date.
